ChessBase Online App Reviews

For $5 we deserve better! About a month ago when I bought this I was a naive little boy w/ lots of disposable income, now Im a man and I feel a little more frugal and I see how I robbed myself. Provide an update that lets users do SOMETHING without the app resetting.

Really like the app. Only problem is how do you save your own files?

Please change back to the old layout and stats format. If space was an issue, try k=1000, M=1,000,000. E.g. 1. e4 53% 3192k. And look at how much screen space you are wasting in landscape mode on the iphone while serving up a tiny unusable board.

This app crashes constantly, even after the suggested reboot...it is in need of serious debugging. Ive updated and reinstalled several times this app is garbage

Some reviewers complained the App only gave them 1,000 games, instead of the 5 million advertised. I believe those reviewers are mistaken. The 5 million game database is online, it is not contained in the App. You use the online search tool in the App to find the games you want, and they are then downloaded to your App for viewing.

This app doesnt remember the last game or screen that u were on before u left the app. Its annoying that u have to go back to the main menu ang browse/ type the players that u want to watch and analyze.

Does not work...

Its great for looking up games and ideas for openings, however the Facebook feature of posting your games seems to be broken after first use... This would be a fantastic app if you could share your games via email or Facebook. Otherwise its mainly to check up on games. Ability to manage pgn games is also not finished. You cant make notes or rename the pgn files to manage them. Auto naming just clutters the saved games and you cant sort it out after a while.

The negative reviews are correct. There is a large database which would be fine except the app seems to be constantly polling the database, which slows it down, the search functionality and the game playback are clunky and, to top it all off, the app does not seem to remember what page you were on, what your last search was, or what game you were looking at. Real amateur stuff.

Of course, this app should be indispensable but ChessBase apparently cannot code a decent app around their database. The search feature is clumsy and one cannot limit to a set of openings. Cannot even do iOS multitasking, if one switches to another app, the whole opening tree or search results are lost. Or, even if one goes back to the main menu and then to the opening book, it starts from scratch. And, with this update, the moves in the opening book are NOT listed in order of popularity, so the first line is c3 c6 g3 g6 Bg2 Bg7 f4... Nice ;-)

Why not create a new database? please chek this problem

This is an extraordinarily poor app in every way.

We recognize that you have a massive investment in your PC version but were just the messengers! The iPad is the way to go. It is so much better than the PC for chess and you should embrace it. Throw your resources into developing for this platform and youll never look back!! Im giving four stars because I want you to make it better - it certainly doesnt deserve four stars... Yet. You know what you have to do. Add IAP if you need to. Well pay for good content if its implemented intelligently. Thanks!

For all the work put into cataloging so many games, one would think that accessing the data would be just as important. I am disappointed to find the navigation to be so poor. A user can search and scroll for any of these 5 million games, but not narrow selections by navigating a data-tree or some helpful browsing function. The random application-crashes are a nuisance and the main task of advancing to the next move of a game can be a challenge for an adult male with fingertips that cover three buttons. I look forward to an improved interface that can justify a five dollar app. This could be a five-star app, essential to all chess enthusiasts.

When I launch the opening explorer nothing happens 9 out of 10 times. When it does work its nice, but it just lets me down most of the time. Enjoy the easy money, ChessBase.

After Apple new Os the app hang when you want to change the current board.

The perfect pocket database app and opening book. Really an incredible value. You can save games you find in PGN format and export them to your computer or email them to yourself. You can also import your own games in PGN and use the app for analysis with the built-in Stockfish engine.

This could be a great app if it worked but it will not connect to the server. I have only been able to get the server a few times in the last two weeks. Without access to the server the app is useless. Dont waste your money on an app that does not work. Needs a lot of improvement to even be a three star app.

Do not buy this app because it crashes all the time. They do not fix this problem which means that they dont care, so why would you pay for their product?
